Understanding your Koi

First, let’s get to know our Koi friends a little better. Originating from Japan, Koi are resilient and can adapt to a variety of climates. However, they are cold-blooded creatures which means their metabolism is directly tied to the temperature of their environment. This is a vital piece of information when considering their dietary needs throughout the year, especially during the colder months.

The Winter Months and your Fish Friends

As winter sets in and the temperatures drop, your Koi’s metabolism slows down. They enter a semi-hibernation state, known as “torpor,” and their need for food decreases drastically. In fact, when water temperatures plunge below 50°F (10°C), it’s best to stop feeding your Koi altogether. Why? Their slowed metabolism means food can sit in their stomach and rot, leading to potential health issues.

But don’t worry, Koi are well-equipped to handle this fasting period. They build up extra fat during the warmer months which they utilize for energy during the winter. So while the landscape is covered in a blanket of snow, your Koi will be happily swimming below the icy surface, living off their stored fat.

Early Spring feeding Protocol in NJ for our Fish Friends

As New Jersey begins to thaw and the water temperature rises above 50°F (10°C), your Koi will start waking from their winter torpor. This is a critical transition time. Start feeding them again, but with caution.

These sleek predators, equipped with sharp teeth and agile movements, often target fish ponds and waterways as a primary food source during the colder months. Fish enthusiasts and pond owners should remain vigilant, employing protective measures to safeguard their aquatic inhabitants from these resourceful hunters during the winter. A “Koi Cage” is one way to help prevent these little theives from grabbing your pond fish. During the Spring cleaning process, minks often hide in the pond, causing the water level to drop and preventing fish from being transferred to their holding tank.

Minks are skilled hunters, swimmers, and agile, and can slide under a net, over or under an electric fence, and into the hole in the ice to keep fish healthy for winter. They will continue taking food until it’s dried up, causing every fish to be eaten. Minks are food hoarders and will store their food for later use. They can ravage a pond within 24 hours, leaving nothing left.

To prevent the mink attack, it is recommended to dye the pond once a month with black pond dye. This helps make the pond dark, inhibiting the mink or muskrat from seeing the fish. This will help prevent the mink from consuming the fish and causing damage to the pond. You can also provide a safe habitat for your pond fish with a “Koi cage” that will prevent the mink from being able to grab your majestic water creatures!
