If there is one thing we would tell every pond owner in Morris County to do before fall really sets in, it is this: get a pond net over your water before the leaves start dropping. Not after. Before.
Leaves that make it into your pond do not just float there. They sink, they decompose, and all winter long they release ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and other compounds that accumulate under the ice and create toxic conditions for your fish. A pond with a heavy leaf load going into winter is a pond in trouble by February.
- Stretch netting taut above the surface on a frame so leaves land on it rather than in the water
- Do not lay the net flat on the water surface — koi can get tangled and leaves pressed against the water can still leach nutrients in
- Check and clear the netting regularly as leaves accumulate so the weight does not pull it into the water
- Remove the netting after the last leaves have fallen and before you start your winter setup
Pond netting also does double duty as a predator deterrent during fall, when herons are especially active and your fish are slower and more vulnerable in cooling water.

4Clean your filter and prepare your equipment before the first freeze

Fall is the time to give your biological filter media a rinse, clear your skimmer basket, and make sure everything is running at full capacity before the water gets cold enough to make maintenance difficult.

A partial water change of 20 to 25 percent using dechlorinated water in early to mid-fall helps clear accumulated nutrients, lowers the organic load heading into winter, and gives your beneficial bacteria a clean environment to work in through the cold months.
